The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) scored a sweeping victory in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) elections in Assam, winning 33 out of 36 seats, according to results declared by the Assam State Election Commission.
The BJP secured 6 seats, while its ally, Rabha Hasong Jautho Sangraam Samiti (RHJSS), emerged as the dominant force with 27 seats. Congress managed to win just one seat, and two Independent candidates also claimed victories.
Among the notable winners was Tankeswar Rabha, Chief Executive Member (CEM), who successfully contested from the No. 7 South Dudhnoi council constituency. Representing RHJSS, he secured 7,164 votes, defeating Congress candidate Sanjib Kumar Rabha, who received 1,593 votes.
Celebrating the win, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X:
“Another Saffron Wave in Assam! Our heartfelt gratitude to the people of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council for speaking in unison and endorsing Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji’s welfare policies, particularly for the indigenous communities. NDA has won 33/36 seats.”
The RHAC region spans parts of Goalpara and Kamrup districts and plays a vital role in representing the interests of the Rabha tribal community.
Meanwhile, the Assam State Election Commission has also announced the schedule for the upcoming Panchayat elections, to be conducted in two phases across 27 districts. The first phase of polling is on May 2, followed by the second phase on May 7. Vote counting is scheduled for May 11.
Over 1.80 crore voters are expected to cast their votes in 25,007 polling stations. The nomination process began on April 3 and will continue until April 11, with scrutiny on April 12 and the final date for withdrawal on April 17.
The elections will cover the Gaon Panchayat, Anchalik Panchayat, and Zilla Parishad levels, encompassing thousands of local governance positions across the state.
